The Nasa Mattress is a myth, there isn’t and never was any space bed technology, what bed manufacturers are using is a by product of the material, a form of visco elastic memory foam, first developed in the 70s in conjunction with the Nasa Space Program to help astronauts absorb enormous G-forces at lift off and re-entry, it was developed for seats not for beds.

It was originally developed in Sweden by a company, called Tempurpedic, after many years of research. It is a material now more widely known as memory foam, although some still like to call it Nasa Memory Foam.

 

It took virtually 30yrs before it was used in beds and mattresses, mainly because it was so difficult to manufacture. The Tempurpedic foam was first perfected for hospital beds. It is only recently that manufacture process has advanced enough to make it durable enough and affordable to be used in the nasa memory foam  mattress that we sleep on today.

A visco memory foam mattress has the ability to relieve pressure points and is why Tempur-Pedic developed them in the first place and why they were so successful in the medical field.

Memory foam is also temperature sensitive. At lower temperatures it is harder, and at higher temperatures it is softer and bouncier. Because of this temperature sensitive quality you want to go for ones that react to body temperatures, as not all memory foams react to the same range of temperatures.

How do pressure points form in the first place, and why does it make sleeping so uncomfortable and how does a memory foam mattress help? This is explained like this:-

 

When you lie on a regular spring mattress, airbed or conventional foam mattress, your own body weight pulls you down. The air or springs react by pushing back against you,and the skin and blood vessels are caught in the middle, being squeezed between the force of your weight and the upwards force of the mattress.

The result is pressure points, that constricts circulation at the area of contact, causing  pain and  discomfort over time. When you lie on a memory foam mattress, however there is no air left in the cells to push back and cause discomfort. The air is spread to adjoining cells and the memory foam mattress simply ‘melts’ under you to provide long-term balanced support and comfort.

Pressure points form at the shoulder blades, buttocks, head, heels, hips and elbows which may result in numbness, stiffness or pain, causing us to toss and turn at night, in an attempt to get more comfortable.
