The Nasa Mattress is a myth, there is not and never was any space nasa mattress technology, what nasa mattress manufacturers are using is a by product of the material, a form of visco elastic memory foam, first developed in the 70s in conjunction with the Space Program to help astronauts absorb enormous G-forces at lift off and re-entry, it was developed for seats not for sleeping on.
The nasa mattress was originally developed by a Swedish company, Tempurpedic, after many years of research, into a material for a nasa mattress that is now more commonly known as memory foam, although some still like to call it Nasa Memory Foam.
It took virtually 30yrs to be used in beds and mattresses, mainly because it was so difficult to manufacture, as a result nasa mattress foam was first perfected only for hospital beds. Nasa mattress memory foam is temperature sensitive. At lower temperatures it is harder, and at higher temperatures it is softer and bouncier. Because of this temperature sensitive quality you want to go for ones that react to body temperatures, as not all nasa mattress memory foams react to the same range of temperatures.When testing nasa mattress memory foam, always take into account the ambient temperature as it will affect the performance of the nasa mattress.
