The first memory foam material was invented in the 1970′s by NASA. At that time, NASA was trying to come up with a material that could cushion the astronauts when taking off due to the high G levels.

The material was invented for yet never made it to any space program. Instead, several medical companies saw the potential of memory foam material and adapted it to be used in the medical industry to help relive bed sores.

When memory foam was first used, though it was effective, it was also very brittle and was not suitable for long term use. However, Tempur-Pedic, the swedish tempurpedic manufacturer was the first company to came up with a new version of memory foam material that was not only effective in the medical industry but also had a longer life span. Tempur-Pedic was also responsible for introducing tempurpedic mattresses and other related tempurpedic products to the average consumer.

Needless to say, it was a hit with the consumer market as there was nothing like it on the market prior to Tempur-Pedic’s entry. The ability to conform to your body and body temperature and pressure relieving properties soon made tempurpedic products the market leader in memory foam industry.

Later on, other memory foam companies join in the fray and came up with many other varieties of memory foam products. However, they could not duplicate the success of tempur-pedic products.
Part of the reason for this is most other memory foam has a lower density per foot than tempurpedic.

Typically, tempurpedic products has 5.3 lb/cubic density while other memory foam products are in the range of 2.5 to 4 lb/cubic density.
The higher the density of memory foam material, the more cushioning effect it has. The higher density is also one of the reasons why tempurpedic products cost more than other memory foam products.

Another property of tempurpedic products is its visco-elastic ability. The visco-elastic material will soften and conform to your body contours and temperature. The lower the temperature, the more rigid the memory foam material.

Tempur-Pedic has also perfected the memory foam technique, something other companies have not done. The memory foam manufacturing process is inherently complicated and not easily duplicated. This has enable them to produce better quality memory foam mattress and other products.

Though many companies have tried to imitate the visco-elastic and density of tempurpedic memory foam, none have come close to it and this is the reason why tempurpedic products continue to be well liked by consumers even though the cost is higher than other memory foam products. Memory Foam Mattress And Pain Relief

If you suffer from chronic pain in your joints, back, lower back or neck etc. then you will know what it’s like to never be able to sit down or go to bed without being in severe discomfort most of the time. It seems that what should be the most comfortable furniture in the house has suddenly become instruments of torture.

A possible solution for some people with chronic pain from Pagets disease or arthritis or other debilitating conditions is to use furniture made from memory foam. Memory foam mattresses are known to help you sleep by making the bed more comfortable and it is being used more and more in luxury hotels and even cinemas to make the experience more enjoyable.

So how does memory foam work and how can it help relieve pain?

Memory foam is a visco-elastic material, which means that it gets softer as it gets warmer. When it gets soft it allows objects to sink into it when the object applies pressure to the foam. Memory foam is also an insulator so it is possible to heat up the material in localised areas without the heat spreading to other parts of the foam. When a warm human body lays on a sheet of memory foam the foam becomes heated by the warmth of the body, just in the areas where the body makes contact with the foam. This causes the material to become softer under the body and allows it to sink into the foam. As you sink further into the memory foam, more and more of your body comes into contact with the foam until the warm, soft foam is giving you good support all over your body.

When all of your body is fully supported by the soft warm foam the pressure on every part of your body in contact with it is equal. Because there are no longer any single points of contact to cause pressure hot spots, all of your body will feel more comfortable. It’s this removal of pressure points by distributing the pressure over all of your body that gives you relief from pain.

Why do we have memory foam?

Memory foam was originally developed for NASA for use in the space program. It was to be used as padding for the astronaut’s seats as a means to relieve some of the discomfort experienced from high acceleration or ‘G’ forces. I’m not quite sure how this was expected to work in that situation however because the astronauts would be wearing space suits at the time which would insulate them from the foam in the seats. No heat no softening of the memory foam.

NASA never actually used the memory foam in it’s space craft because it gives off a toxic gas in small quantities which could cause problems in a confined and air tight space.

Try some alternatives

Memory foam mattresses are still expensive products, especially good quality ones, so it pays to try out some alternatives before changing your mattress. Memory foam pillows and toppers can easily be found and they can make a significant difference if you are having trouble sleeping. There are also cheaper materials like high-density polyurethane foam and latex foam that are also very good and might suit your pocket better.

If you have trouble with the comfy chairs in your living room then try a memory foam cushion or two. Having experienced how uncomfortable a soft chair can be when I had some lower back pain problems I know that any improvements would be worthwhile.

Now the big question arises what is your purpose of purchasing a memory foam mattress topper. If it is just as a quick fix to your uncomfortable mattress, then the cheaper can improve the feel to some extent for some time.

However, if you are looking for a memory foam mattress topper like purchasing a memory foam sleep system, then the higher priced memory foam mattress topper will be an appropriate choice. It is due to the fact that it will last for longer and will also offer proper support to your body.

Actually, there are many retailers which are of the view that just showing a hand imprint on the foam is enough to make people believe that they are being provided with the same best quality at bargain price. However, if you look out for the thickness of the topper, the density, the price and whether it is imported or manufactured in the UK, you will also want to take a note of what guarantees / warranty is being offered.
In the end, it is recommend that you should not use a mattress pad on the top of a memory foam mattress topper as it will not let the feeling of comfort reach your body. It is so that if you place anything in between the body and the memory foam, it will diminish the feel of the topper to a great extent.
